Reported Leeds United summer target tells Real Madrid he will leave on free transfer this summer

Reported Leeds United summer target Marcelo has told Real Madrid president Florentino Perez that he will leave the club on a free transfer next year.

That is according to El Nacional Web, who claim that Marcelo is ready to make his 15th season at the club his last after a glittering career at the Bernabeu.

The 33-year-old has won 22 major honours in Madrid since his arrival from Fluminense, including four Champions League and five La Liga titles.

Marcelo has netted 38 goals and provided 101 assists during his 530 appearances at the club and has been arguably one of the greatest left backs in modern history.

Leeds were linked with a move for a left back throughout the summer and eventually landed their number one target in Junior Firpo when he arrived from Barcelona in July.

There is no expectation Leeds will pursue Marcelo after signing Firpo, however the former Barcelona player is the Whites’ only real out and out left back in the squad and with his current absence, Stuart Dallas has been the man to fill in.

But with Dallas also Marcelo Bielsa’s first choice centre midfielder, that leaves Leeds short on options in two areas of the pitch, meaning Marcelo could provide a useful squad option should he make the move to Elland Road.

Given the 58-time capped Brazil international’s pedigree, Leeds would face competition for his signature in the unlikely event they reignited their reported summer interest.

Fellow Premier League outfit Everton were also linked with a move for Marcelo during the summer as they also look to provide adequate cover for their first choice left back Lucas Digne.

It does, however, remain to be seen whether Leeds do decide to go in with an offer given his likely high wage demands.
