Here are the morning Leeds United headlines on Tuesday, July 27.

Cooper: Phillips ‘one of the best midfielders in the world’

Leeds United skipper Liam Cooper has hailed Kalvin Phillips as one of the planet’s best midfielders in the world following his displays at Euro 2020.

Phillips returned to Thorp Arch on Monday following his exploits with England as the Three Lions made it to the final of Euro 2020, where they were defeated on penalties by Italy. Phillips started every match fo Gareth Southgate’s side as he announced himself on the international scene.

“He announced himself in that first game against Croatia and I’ve told him that his life has changed forever now,” Cooper told Sky Sports News.

“He knows that though, he’s not a stupid lad and lives his life the right way anyway. I’ve seen his journey from a young lad to where he is now and it’s been a pleasure to see – and he belongs there.

“He works so hard here (at Leeds), all the boys and the people of Leeds think the world of him and he deserves everything that comes his ways.

“I’ve seen how hard he works every single day, I see how much he takes on and turns it into his game.

“For me, he is one of the best midfielders in the world right now.”

Depleted Rovers may deny Bielsa challenge he wants

Leeds United will face Championship side Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday in their first match against professional opponents since the final day of the 2020/21 Premier League season.

The Whites kickstart their pre-season campaign with a trip to non-league neighbours Guiseley tonight, a game quickly followed by a visit to Ewood Park.

Marcelo Bielsa will be hoping to test the fitness of first-team players across the Pennines, but may not get the challenge he craves.

The change Roberts and Rodrigo have to make

A list of goals scored by current members of the Leeds United squad has highlighted a key area of improvement for two particular players.

For various reasons, Rodrigo and Tyler Roberts have not been particularly prolific during their time at Elland Road.

LUFCDATA has compiled a list that shows which current players have scored the most goals during their time at the club and it is unsurprisingly topped by Patrick Bamford with 43 goals.

The versatile Stuart Dallas comes second on 27, followed by Mateusz Klich on 21 and Jack Harrison on 18. Kalvin Phillips completes the top five with his 13 goals in a Leeds shirt.

Aside from Bamford, there are two senior forwards at the club in Rodrigo and Roberts.
