Loan strategy, Lewis Bate move, Leif Davis cover – Behind the scenes at Leeds United

Koch13: “Is Lewis Bate likely to be our only midfield addition this summer?”

BC: “I would doubt that. A central midfielder is still an important acquisition for Bielsa and Orta. If you count wingers as midfielders too, then I wouldn’t rule out a late move for one of those if things line up in the right way later into the window. Bate will largely be for the under-23s rather than as the central midfielder being discussed for the first team.”

Danlufc10: “Hi Beren, was wondering who the new cm will be as pre season games are coming up next week? Also, the Noa Lang talk has cooled a little and now I’m seeing the talk of Adama Traore again which I’m guessing is pure speculation.”

BC: “There’s not been much out there on who the mystery central midfielder might be up to now. It’s fair to say a lot of names linked in recent days have been knocked back and refuted by sources at the club. Lang has a lot of admirers across Europe, though Club Brugge are in a strong bargaining position with him given he only signed a permanent deal there this summer after one year on loan. That may be one Leeds have to wait until late in the window for, if they do wish to pursue him. Traore doesn’t seem to fit the current bill, as I understand it.”

prutbrk: “Hi Beren. We have been linked with so many players during this transfer window, as always it seems, and one never knows which way to turn amid all the conflicting reports. One minute we are in for one player then another report says we were never in for him and it’s all speculation. In your opinion, do you have any idea of a player/players that you feel we have true concrete interest in and that could come to fruition? Or do you think it will be a case like Raph where it came pretty much out of the blue at the 11th hour? Thanks”

BC: “The goalkeepers Leeds have been linked with are understood to be legitimate, with Klaesson especially interesting them. That one does seem to have legs given how freely they are talking about it at the Valerenga end. Noa Lang is someone they have long been linked with and I am led to believe they do like him, but along with a dozen other clubs across Europe. The central midfielder seems harder to call at the moment and the club are keeping their cards close to their chest. As you say, Raphinha is a great example of the way the club would like to do business. Swiftly and privately with the outcome they want.”

F_Wilson6: “Will Leeds look to the loan market at all with Harrison now on a permanent deal allowing for other premier league loans. Or is the focus on spending on what they believe to be ‘good value’.”

BC: “I was speaking to someone earlier about transfers, with no connection to Leeds, and they said there has been a slow move in the PL towards taking players on a one year loan before then securing them on a multi-year permanent deal with the transfer fee spread out across the length of the contract. Costa is a good example of this type of deal. I don’t think Leeds would rule anything in or out if the player they really wanted was on a loan or permanent deal. You would sense permanent deals are more sensible if you are planning to improve the player and increase their transfer value in the long-term, but if they need a gap filling with a player Bielsa likes and a loan is the only way to do it, I don’t think Orta would baulk at that notion.”

Markmarcus76: “Date of new kits release please little lads doing his nut”

BC: “I sense you’re not the only one struggling with the anticipation now. It really can’t be much longer now. The team are playing friendlies in less than a week and you would expect they surely have to be in the new kit for those. Failing that, the new season is less than three weeks away and they obviously will have it out before then. Anyone with an internet connection is bound to have seen the alleged designs on sale in Australia, so you may know what it’s going to look like.”

Msc24: “Hi Beren, do you know if Adam Forshaw has been involved in pre-season training at all please? Also what are your thoughts on the chances of Dan James finally arriving now that Sancho is a done deal for Man Utd? I think Bielsa would turn him into some player and that could be a loan with obligation/option to buy now that we have a free loan spot.”

BC: “As of yesterday I was told he had been involved in training, which is a great sign. We will obviously learn a lot more when we see the squads Bielsa puts out in the friendlies next week.

If Bielsa liked Dan James in 2019, he’s likely to still rate him now. It’s a similar dynamic with Ryan Kent. Bielsa won’t stop liking players just because they move elsewhere. Whether he’s someone Leeds will pursue in this window, I can’t be sure. There is chatter about wanting a winger and I am sure his name would be in the conversation, but Man Utd would want to make a profit on him and, as we have seen with Raphinha, Orta loves a bargain on the continent.”

lukeluke123: “Hi Beren, when will more first team signings start coming in and how many more do you see coming in, we need a central midfielder and a left winger with a right foot, the season starts in 3 and a half weeks, I just want to know you what you know about signings for the first team coming in because we need them if we want to push up there’s no point coming this far then stopping l I us fans want reassurance that more first team singings will be coming in”

BC: “Good to hear from you, Luke. If I knew exactly when signings would be announced I’d be sure to pass on the information. The truth is it’s hard for anyone, even Leeds, to know exactly when they will announce signings with weeks or days of notice. We’re expecting Bate to happen very soon. They want a central midfielder and possibly a winger later into the window. Orta said himself, he wanted to have everything done before pre-season started, but the market just doesn’t work like that. We all have to be patient.”

Futers11: “Hi Beren, Do you think the CM is more of an 8 or 10? And do you think we will go for LB cover if Davis goes out on loan? Maybe Cornet covers LW too. Thanks”

BC: “I would expect them to be more of an eight from those two options. I’m not sure on the plan if Davis does go out on loan. He certainly needs regular game time in this coming season, so much depends on what Bielsa sees in pre-season. We know Dallas can cover Firpo at left-back if needs be, but you’re right to wonder if Bielsa would want just one more in there to cover if Davis went. Cornet doesn’t seem likely.”
