Leeds United news amid Jamie Shackleton message and Bielsa’s must start options

Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Friday, August 6.

Danny Mills tips Jamie Shackleton to leave Leeds United on loan

Jamie Shackleton should follow Leif Davis’ example and leave Leeds United on a season-long loan deal.

That is according to former United defender Danny Mills who believes that would be the next best move for the 21-year-old academy graduate.

The full-back has made 63 appearances for Leeds’ first team but was restricted to just 13 Premier League appearances last term.

“I think a loan move would be a good move for him. He needs to get out there and prove himself,” Mills told Football Insider.

“Let’s be honest, he’s going to be on the bench most of the time at Leeds. He might come off the bench, five minutes here and 10 minutes there, max.

“If I was him, I’d be thinking ‘Right, ok, I’ve got a bit of a taste of first-team football, I want more of it’. If that’s the case then he has to go out on loan.”

Marcelo Bielsa has five must-start Leeds United options desperate for minutes vs Villarreal

Leeds United head into their final pre-season friendly tomorrow as they face Europa League winners Villarreal with several players still needing vital minutes just to catch up with their peers.

While Robin Koch (270 minutes), Illan Meslier (270) and Pascal Struijk (268) have played three full matches, the latter’s late substitution aside, some of their teammates have played no more than three halves.

Jack Harrison (246) is the only other senior Leeds player with more than four hours of pitch time under his belt this pre-season.

Jamie Shackleton (235), Luke Ayling (225) and Rodrigo (219) are the right side of three-and-a-half hours.

Stuart Dallas (209), Helder Costa (204), Mateusz Klich (203) and Raphinha (196) are well-matched too with a shade over three hours from the friendlies.

Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes sends Leeds United warning after first break in ‘five years’

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has insisted they are ready for the new Premier League campaign as the opening-day clash with Leeds United edges closer.

Fernandes will perhaps be the most determined of all the Red Devils to impress against Leeds, having struggled to make an impact the last time he came up against the Whites.

Kalvin Phillips managed to nullify the threat of the Portugal international, who shone in the 6-2 drubbing at Old Trafford but was battled out of the game by Phillips in the reverse fixture.

Fernandes also underwhelmed at Euro 2020, meaning he will not be short of motivation to rediscover his best form against Leeds.

Speaking to Manchester United’s official website, he said: “The lads are ready.

“We have been training hard, everyone is training really well and everyone will be ready for the beginning of the season.”
