Gauteng State of Disaster Declared After Devastating Flooding Widespread Flooding
On Wednesday, January 25, the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) published a notice announcing the declaration of the provincial state of disaster. This comes after flooding caused havoc in Gauteng.
After assessing the impact and consulting various state organs, Dr Elias Sithole, the Head of the National Disaster Management Centre, declared the flooding incidents “which caused a devastating impact in various municipalities in the Gauteng Province, resulting in the loss of a life, damage to property, infrastructure, and the environment” a provincial disaster.

The disaster declaration was issued on January 23 in accordance with Section 23(1)(b) of the Disaster Management Act of 2002. (Act No. 57 of 2002).
According to Sithole, the primary responsibility now is to coordinate and manage the disaster. The State of Disaster allows the Gauteng government to call on the resources of other state organs if necessary. The National Disaster Management Centre requires all affected state organs to prepare and submit reports.

The disaster declaration will be revoked if certain criteria are met and the authorities determine that the disaster has passed or the time limit has expired.
