Here are the latest Leeds United evening headlines on Friday 23rd July, 2021.
Manchester United confirmed the addition of Jadon Sancho earlier this afternoon, putting an end to one of the longest-running transfer sagas of recent years.
The England winger may well make his Red Devils debut in the 2021/22 campaign’s curtain-raiser at Old Trafford when Manchester United take on Leeds.
Marcelo Bielsa’s Whites will be at full strength for the first game of the new season, owing to their rigorous pre-season schedule and players returning to training quicker than many had anticipated.
Sancho has issued Kalvin Phillips with a warning however, stating he is looking for a ‘confidence booster’ from the opening day contest.

“Definitely – I told him [Phillips] to watch out, so he knows!” Sancho told club media after his unveiling.
“I’m excited for the new season, especially as the first game is at home. That’s always a confidence booster to be in front of your own fans so it will be nice.”
Klaesson work permit issue pondered
Yet more speculation over the future of Norwegian goalkeeper Kristoffer Klaesson today as it was reported that Leeds hope to sign the player in the coming weeks.
Klaesson reportedly held talks with Victor Orta in Oslo last week ahead of a proposed move, and talk of a £1.6m fee being agreed with Valerenga has given rise to concerns that Klaesson may not qualify for a work permit.
LeedsLive reporter Joe Donnohue has broken down the finer points of Klaesson’s work permit application here.
Steve Evans makes Kalvin Phillips comparison
Former Leeds United manager Steve Evans has compared his new loanee at Gillingham to England midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
Daniel Phillips – no relation – has joined the Gills on a loan deal from Watford.
The League One side are currently managed by ex-Leeds boss Evans.
“I wouldn’t expect many of our supporters to know much about the young man, but they will certainly know about Kalvin Phillips of Leeds United and England, and if they want a comparison from me then there it is,” he said – as quoted by Kent Online.
“Given he is much more inexperienced, and although younger than Kalvin, what a great benchmark for him to aim for.”
